Weekly Date Night

You meant to do something together last week. Then Tuesday went sideways, kids mutinied at dinner on Wednesday, and by 9:15 on Thursday you were both on the couch. Four feet apart, scrolling.

Nobody did anything wrong. That is what makes it hard to fix.

The Blackout Dinner. 75 minutes and you do not cook anything.

What you need

  • Four candles or more. Any candles. Birthday candles in a mug counts
  • One blanket you do not mind sitting on
  • Food that needs no cooking and no plates: bread, cheese, olives, grapes, chocolate, chips, whatever you both actually like
  • Something to drink that is not water
  • A drawer in a different room

Optional, and only if you want it: a set of taper candles and cheap holders runs about $12 and makes this feel like a completely different room. Skip it. The candles in your junk drawer work.

The plan

8:35 Kill every light in the room. All of them. Then put both phones in a drawer in another room. Not face down on the table. In a drawer. In a different room.

8:40 Blanket on the living room floor. Not the table. The floor is the whole trick, and you will understand why about ten minutes in.

8:45 Light the candles. Put the food out on the blanket, still in its packaging if that is where it lives. Sit down facing each other.

8:50 Ask the first question.

9:20 Ask the second one.

9:50 Ask the third one, or not. If you are already talking, ignore me and keep going.

The conversation

One. What is the best meal we have ever had together? Not the fanciest. The best.

Two. What is something you wanted to do this year that we have not made time for?

Three. What have you been carrying lately that I might not know about?

The point

Candlelight is not romance theater. It is a constraint. In the dark you cannot see the dishes, the laundry pile, the thing on the counter you have both been ignoring for nine days, or your phone. The only thing left in focus is the person across from you.

Most marriages do not run short on love. They run short on attention, which is what you'll be giving most this week.

If you only have 20 minutes

Two candles. Two chairs. One question, the third one.

Skip the food, skip the blanket, skip the floor. It still works.

Hit reply and tell me how it went. Did you make it to the third question? Did the floor thing land or was it just uncomfortable?

I read every reply, and what you send back shapes what shows up next Sunday.
