You are not in a fight. You are just done. The house has gone quiet, the kitchen is mostly clean, and sitting across from each other to talk about something real feels like one more job on the list.
So you both pick up your phones. It is not avoidance. It is the only thing left in the house that asks nothing of you.
The Loser Answers.
What you need
Ten coins each. Any coins, out of a pocket or the car
One spoon
A blanket or rug to play on. Not a hard table, and that is not an accident
One phone left in the room, face down, and the rest in a drawer somewhere else
The plan
Sit on the floor facing each other, close enough that your knees touch. Phones away except the one, and that one stays face down.
Round one. Thumb war, best of three. The loser answers the first question. The winner does not get to ask a follow-up. The winner listens.
Round two. Staring contest, first to blink or laugh.
Round three. Stack your ten coins one-handed while the other one counts to sixty out loud. Tallest tower wins. On the blanket, not the table, which makes it harder and much quieter.
Round four. Balance the spoon on your nose, longest wins. No question attached to this one. You are playing it because you want to, and that is the part nobody can schedule.
The conversation
One. What is the last thing that made you laugh when I was not there?
Two. What is something you want this year that you have not said out loud?
Three. What have you been handling on your own that you did not have to?
The point
Nobody decides to have a real conversation at nine at night. The deciding is the obstacle, not the talking, and a stupid game takes the deciding away and leaves only the answer.
If this is the first one you have read: a new date like this one arrives every Sunday, free, and it is planned down to the last step.
