An hour, once the house is quiet, and nobody has to be good at talking.

What you need

  • One lamp. Every other light off

  • Something warm to drink

  • One year in the past selected before you sit down

The plan

  1. Pick one year together, before you sit down. The year you met is the easy choice. The best year from before life got this full is the better one. Any year works.

  2. One lamp on, every other light in the room off. Both phones in a kitchen drawer. Two mugs of something warm, made before you sit. Sit on the couch turned toward each other, knees touching, not side by side facing the TV.

  3. Start with the address. Where each of you lived that year: the street, the floor, which wall the bed was against. Then the car. Then what was in the fridge.

  4. Take turns, one detail each, back and forth. What the place smelled like. What you ate for dinner most weeks. One song that was always on, named, not played. One thing you were scared of that year.

  5. Then one of you gets a phone from the drawer, and you flip through a few pictures from that year together. Keep it to under 10 to reduce the scroll time on this date.

  6. One rule the whole way through: nobody skips ahead. Stay in that year.

The conversation

One. What is one thing from that year you had forgotten until just now?

Two. Which part of that year would you like back? Is that possible?

Three. What happened that year that had the biggest impact on today? What do you think will happen this year that will have the biggest impact years from now?

Add this date to your calendar

It lands on Wednesday night. Move it to whichever night works, then invite your partner so it is on both calendars.

The point

You’ve been through a lot together. So much of who you are today is based on what you experienced together back then. The same will be true five years from now. Don’t let the logistics in life put you on separate tracks. It looks manageable today, but turns into a chasm years from now.
