## Before the ten
Some weeks you do not need a better idea. You need a smaller one.
This is the list for the week that already took everything. Nobody is cooking. Nobody is going
anywhere. The kids finally went down and there are ninety minutes left before one of you falls
asleep sitting up.
Every date in here takes **twenty minutes**, starts **after the kids are asleep**, happens **inside
your house**, and uses **only what you already own**. No shopping trip. No setup. Nothing that could
wake anybody.
**Pick one. Do not read all ten this week.**
Every plan below uses real clock times and assumes the kids are down by 8:30. If your house runs
later, slide the whole thing. The point is that at 8:40pm, tired, neither of you has to decide
anything.
## 1. The Two-Spoon Dessert
**Category:** Table · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
One sweet thing, one plate, two spoons, somewhere you never eat.
**You need:** whatever sweet thing is already in the house. One plate. Two spoons.
**8:40** Find the one sweet thing you have. Ice cream, a leftover birthday cupcake, the good
chocolate somebody hid. Put all of it on one plate. Not two plates. One.
**8:44** Sit somewhere you have never eaten together. The stairs. The kitchen floor. The end of the
bed. The location is doing more of the heavy lifting here than the dessert is.
**8:50** Ask: what is a food from your childhood you would want to eat again?
## 2. The Prediction Game
**Category:** Play · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
Two pieces of paper. Find out how well you have actually been paying attention.
**You need:** two scraps of paper and two pens.
**8:40** Separately, write down three guesses about the other person: what they are most looking
forward to this week, what they are secretly dreading, and one thing they have been meaning to do
and have not.
**8:47** Trade papers. Read them out loud. Score them honestly.
**8:55** Ask: which one did I get most wrong, and why?
## 3. The Photo Scroll
**Category:** Story · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
One phone, one screen, one month from a couple of years ago.
**You need:** one phone. The other one goes in a drawer in a different room.
**8:40** Pick a month at least two years back. Not a vacation. An ordinary one.
**8:44** Scroll it together. Alternate with this sequence. Him: stop the scroll on a specific
photo. Her: tell me more about this. How does it make you feel now? Switch roles.
**8:56** Ask: what were we worried about that year that turned out fine?
## 4. The Lights-Off Ten
**Category:** Rest · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
For the night when talking feels like work.
**You need:** nothing. That is the entire point.
**8:40** Both of you lie down on top of the covers. Lights off. Phones in another room. Do not get
under the blankets, because that is sleep and this is not.
**8:43** One of you asks: what is the heaviest thing on your heart this week?
**8:53** Say nothing for ten minutes. Not a silence you have to fill. Just stop.
## 5. Five Minutes Each
**Category:** Sensory · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
Hands only. It is the touch that is not asking for anything else.
**You need:** any lotion in the house. A towel.
**8:40** Sit facing each other, knees touching, one lamp on.
**8:43** One of you takes the other's hands and works on them for five full minutes. Time it,
because five minutes is much longer than you think and quitting early is the whole failure mode.
**8:50** Swap. Five full minutes back.
**8:57** Ask: when this week did you feel most energized? Why was that?
## 6. The Counter Nightcap
**Category:** Table · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
Two mugs, standing up, twenty minutes, no sitting down.
**You need:** two mugs. Decaf coffee, tea, cocoa, whatever is in the cupboard.
**8:40** Make two of whatever it is. Both of you stay standing at the kitchen counter.
**8:45** No sitting. Standing keeps it short and keeps it from turning into television, which is
what happens every other night at this exact time.
**8:50** Ask: what is one thing you want us to say no to next season?
## 7. The One-Page List
**Category:** Make · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
One pen, one page, alternating turns. You end the night holding something.
**You need:** one sheet of paper and one pen. One of each, not two.
**8:40** Title the page: things we want to do in the next 5 years.
**8:44** Alternate. You write one, hand the pen over, they write one. No vetoing what the other
person writes. Keep going until you have ten.
**8:56** Stick it on the fridge. Ask: which one of these could we actually do this month?
## 8. Back to Back
**Category:** Rest · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
Sit against each other and talk without having to arrange your face.
**You need:** a floor and a wall.
**8:40** Sit on the floor, backs against each other. Feel each other's weight. One lamp on across
the room or none at all.
**8:45** Talk without turning around. Eye contact is work when you are this tired, and taking it
away makes the honest thing easier to say.
**8:55** Ask: what do you need from me this week that you have not asked for?
## 9. The Blind Draw
**Category:** Play · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
Draw each other from memory. Both results will be bad.
**You need:** two pieces of paper, two pens.
**8:40** Three minutes on a clock. Draw the other person's face from memory. No looking at them, no
looking at your paper.
**8:44** Trade. Laugh quietly, because there is a sleeping child down the hall.
**8:48** Do it again, using your fingers on each other's backs.
**8:55** Ask: what is something about my face you would recognize anywhere?
## 10. Year One
**Category:** Story · 20 minutes · after bedtime · free
The two of you before any of this existed.
**You need:** nothing.
**8:40** Each of you comes up with one specific memory from your first year of marriage. Not the
wedding. The ordinary year after it. An apartment, a car, a job, a trip.
**8:47** Tell them. Small details only. What the kitchen looked like. What you argued about.
**8:55** Ask: what would you tell that couple, if you could tell them one thing?
## What happens now
A new one lands every **Wednesday at 6:00am**. One date, fully planned, same five rules: after
bedtime, inside the house, under $25, under fifteen minutes of setup, and quiet enough not to wake
anybody.
You do not have to do it every week. Most people do not. The ones who get the most out of this
tend to do two a month and stop feeling bad about the other two.
**One thing before you go.** Hit reply on any issue and tell me which of these ten you actually
did. I read every reply, and what you send back shapes what shows up on Wednesday.
Marriages rarely run short on love. They run short on attention. Attention is the part you have
to decide to give.
